Nawanyago Health Centre III
About 25 miles outside of the city Jinja, home to the "source" of the beautiful Nile River, lays the lovely Nawanyago Health Center III hospital. A privately operated Christian hospital, Nawanyago is run by Sister Angela, who is a skilled sonographer trained by Imaging the World. Her attention to detail and commitment to her faith and the health of the village has made her an important figure within the Nawanyago community. Medical Safaris is grateful to have her there to ensure our volunteers are properly taken care of. The hospital sees about *** antenatal visits per month, 50 - 60 births and has an active HIV clinic, laboratory, psychiatry department, and community outreach programs. Volunteers can be actively involved within any of these departments.
Just a short walk from the health centre is a new school, Negowa, for local children that teaches them useful trade skills that they can then take more readily into the work force. They have built new privates rooms with a personal bathroom, sink and shower. Like all of the other Medical Safari accommodations, the property is enclosed within a large fence and is very safe and secure. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served there daily. It is quiet yet the movement and sounds of young children makes the setting a welcoming place to return after work to enjoy the African sun as it dips into the stunning scenery. This is a perfect location where volunteers can take some time off from the Nawanyago hospital if things are slow and help out with anyone of the many classes or needs of the Negow school. They are grateful to have volunteers stay and help their program.
The more bustling town of Jinja is about a 25 minute taxi ride from Nawanyago where volunteers can find restaurants, cafes, shops, bars, etc.. There are even some hotels that one can spend an afternoon relaxing by the pool soaking up the African sun.
